Scroll through three years in the valley

The idea

Survival without the stopwatch

Most survival games run on pressure. Meters drain, enemies arrive, and one mistake costs hours. Many players love the gathering, crafting and building, then leave because of the stress.

Pinehold keeps the first part and drops the second. You are alone in a wild valley. You still eat, sleep and keep a fire, but nothing hunts you and hunger never kills. What you earn is a home, built piece by piece, at your own pace.

Why it is different

Three rules the whole game follows

  1. Hunger slows you. It never kills you.

Hungry, you walk slower and cannot run. Well fed, you carry 20 kg instead of 15. No death screen, no lost progress.

  2. Everything is built by hand

A campfire is eight stones in a ring, dry grass, five sticks, and two flints struck until the sparks catch. Homes go up the same way.

  3. The valley keeps its own time

Mushrooms come up at five in the morning. Berries take days to regrow. A fire burns down while you sleep unless you feed it.

Proof

This is running today

The whole valley is generated from code: terrain, three kinds of forest, a lake, layered mountains and a full day and night.

The long game

From a bed of grass to a house

Your first night is on a mat of grass in a frame of sticks. Every tool after that opens a new material, and every material opens a new kind of home.

    1. Stone and wood

Flint knife, grass cord, digging stick, stone axe.

    2. Clay and fire

Kiln, charcoal, pots, bricks, roof tiles.

    3. Iron

Ore, a bloomery, then axe, saw and nails.

    4. Lime and cement

Clinker ground with gypsum. Foundations and cellars.

    Where it stands

A prototype you can walk around in

    Working today

    • A valley 660 metres across with a lake and a lookout hill
    • Day and night with sun, moon, stars, clouds
    • Gathering with a 15 kg carry limit
    • Crafting the first four tools
    • Hand-built campfire with fuel and smoke
    • A hand-built grass bed and sleep
    • Hunger, berry bushes, 11 mushroom species
    • Digging for worms, clay and stone
    • Map, item bar, menus and options
    • Save and load

    Coming next

    1. Finish the first age. Felling trees, fishing, cooking, homes up to a log cabin.
    2. Sound and polish. Ambient audio, music, more variety in the world.
    3. Public demo. One polished hour of play for anyone to try.
    4. The later ages. Clay, iron and cement on systems that already exist.

    Depth in small things

    Eleven mushrooms. Eight are safe.

Each kind prefers its own forest. The game tells you a mushroom's name and nothing else. You learn the rest by tasting.

      In development

      The valley is still growing

Pinehold is being made by a solo developer. A release date and platforms will be announced when the game is closer to done.

      How to contributeAvailable soon

Contributions are not open yet. To hear when they are, write to hello@pineholdgame.com

      Before you do

A contribution does not guarantee that the game will be finished or released.

Pinehold is an early prototype and may change, be delayed or be cancelled. A contribution is a gift toward development, not an investment: it gives no ownership, no share of revenue and no financial return.
